Kleermaker admits "hurt" over Covid positive test

By Phil Lanning 22/01/2021

MARTIJN Kleermaker admitted that he went to a mental coach because of “hurt” following positive Covid-19 test that ended his World Championship hopes.

The lanky Dutchman was ruled out on the eve of the Alexandra Palace showpiece as he was just beginning to make an impression after switching from BDO to PDC.

Kleermaker, 29, had beaten Rob Cross just a month earlier in the European Championship but revealed being ruled out the Worlds had a big effect.

He told Tungsten Tales: “Everytime when you're looking on Facebook, Instagram or television, it was all about darts and I didn't want to see the darts because I wasn't allowed to play.

“That hurt me a lot but I went to my mental coach this week and we said to each other, we're not going to look back, we are going to look forward.

“I will come back harder and harder and I will show everybody what I'm capable of and next year I will be in the World's again.”

The Dutch Giant admits he has found the standard is much stronger since his move of codes from BDO to PDC.

He added: “At the BDO, it's also a lot of fun. When I was a seeded player, the first three, four rounds were quite easy.

“At the PDC, every game is a hard game. You have to average 100 or more and then you lose also. It's harder, it's more business. I'm really enjoying it, I'm learning a lot.

“I think I played some good stuff in my first year. It was a good year for sure but the thing with the Covid test in December was a bit annoying but I'm looking forward to year number two and reaching the top 64 and maybe more.”
