2017 German Darts Masters preview

Adrian Lewis, fresh from his nine-darter in the Premier League on Thursday, has been handed a tough 2017 HappyBet German Darts Masters first round matches against in-form Daryl Gurney.

Northern Irishman SuperChin comes into this event on the back of a maiden ranking title triumph at Players Championship 7, followed by a final appearance the following day, so will be fired up for his encounter with 2012 champion of this tournament Jackpot.

Awaiting the winner of this mouthwatering match-up is Jelle Klaasen, who is seeded 11th for this tournament in Jena.

Other top names to look out for on day one in the first round include Lewis’ nine-dart victim Raymond van Barneveld, fellow former world champion Mark Webster, Mervyn King and Robert Thornton.

Barney takes on Dutch compatriot Michael Plooy, to face Alan Norris on Sunday.

Two-time defending champion Michael van Gerwen is top seed for this event, and takes on the winner of Greece’s John Michael or a German qualifier.

Joe Cullen, who also recently claimed his first PDC ProTour title after beating Gurney at Players Championship 8, will look forward to playing one of Andrew Gilding or a German qualifier too.

Other stars in action on Sunday from the second round include 2017 UK Open finalists Peter Wright and Gerwyn Price, James Wade, Mensur Suljovic, Michael Smith, Kim Huybrechts, Benito van de Pas, Ian White and 16th seed Spaniard Cristo Reyes.

The Nordic & Baltic and East European qualifiers are Daniel Larsson of Sweden and Poland’s Krzysztof Ratajski respectively.

This year, the prize money has been increased from £115k to £135k overall, but the winner will still take away £25k.
